Why most people never get good at heart sounds

You can read about a crescendo-decrescendo murmur a hundred times and still freeze at the bedside. Recognition is an ear skill, and ear skills are built one way: hear, guess, get corrected, repeat.

๐Ÿ“–

Textbooks describe, they do not train

Reading that aortic stenosis radiates to the carotids does nothing for the moment you have a stethoscope on a chest and three seconds to decide.

๐Ÿ”

Passive listening does not stick

Playing a murmur on loop feels productive. Tests of recall show it fades within days. You need to be forced to commit to an answer before you hear the label.

๐Ÿฅ

Real patients are rare and random

On rotations you might hear two murmurs a week, usually ones you have already seen. The rare findings you will be examined on come up once, if at all.

A quiz loop that builds a clinical ear

Every session plays a real recording and asks one question: what do you hear? You answer, you get instant feedback with the reasoning, and the app quietly weights that sound so it comes back sooner if you missed it.

Short sessions, honest feedback, spaced repetition. It is the same active-recall loop that outperforms passive review by more than 2ร— in six weeks, applied to the one skill nobody can teach you from a slide.

Every heart sound you will be tested on

The library covers the full range from normal S1 S2 to the findings that show up on USMLE, NCLEX, PANCE and OSCE stations, each recorded at the sites where it is actually heard.

Murmurs

  • Aortic stenosis and regurgitation
  • Mitral stenosis and regurgitation
  • Tricuspid and pulmonic lesions
  • Early, mid, late and holosystolic timing
  • Innocent flow murmurs vs pathological

Extra heart sounds

  • S3 ventricular gallop
  • S4 atrial gallop
  • Split S1 and split S2
  • Ejection clicks and opening snaps
  • Pericardial friction rub

Rhythms

  • Atrial fibrillation at multiple sites
  • AV block
  • Regular vs irregularly irregular
  • Normal sinus rhythm at every site
  • Same rhythm compared across the precordium

Recorded at the aortic area, pulmonic area, lower left sternal border, apex and more, so you learn how the same lesion changes across the precordium.

See the sound, not just hear it

Pro adds a spectrogram and waveform view synced to the audio. You watch the diamond of aortic stenosis, the decrescendo of aortic regurgitation and the low-frequency thud of an S3 sit exactly where the textbook says they should.

Decomposition mode takes a mixed recording of heart and lung sounds and trains you to pull them apart, which is what every real chest sounds like.

  • Spectrogram training synced to every recording
  • Mixed heart-and-lung decomposition drills
  • Landmarks mode on an interactive chest-wall map
  • Unlimited sessions

Frequently asked questions

Is Auscultify free?

Yes. Download it free and practice heart sounds every day at no cost. Pro unlocks spectrogram training, decomposition drills, landmark drills and unlimited sessions, with a 7-day free trial you can cancel anytime.

Are the heart sounds real recordings or synthesized?

Every one of the 200+ recordings was captured from actual patients. Synthesized murmurs are too clean; real ones have the breath sounds, variable intensity and background noise you will meet at the bedside, which is exactly what trains your ear.

Which heart sounds are included?

Normal S1 and S2, S3 and S4 gallops, split S1 and S2, ejection clicks, opening snaps, pericardial rub, systolic and diastolic murmurs of the major valve lesions, innocent murmurs, atrial fibrillation and AV block, each at the auscultation sites where it is best heard.

Do I need headphones?

Headphones are strongly recommended. Low-frequency sounds like S3, S4 and the rumble of mitral stenosis sit below what most phone speakers reproduce well. Any over-ear or in-ear headphones work.

Does the app work for USMLE, NCLEX and OSCE prep?

Yes. The library covers the murmurs, gallops and rhythms those exams test. Landmarks mode drills the stethoscope placements OSCE examiners score, and the daily quiz format mirrors the audio questions on Step 1.

Is Auscultify available on iPhone and iPad?

Yes. Auscultify is on the App Store for iPhone and iPad. Download it once and practice anywhere, on the ward, on the bus or at home.

How long until I can recognize murmurs reliably?

Most learners see their accuracy climb within the first two weeks of ten-minute daily sessions. The progress screen shows your accuracy trend per mode so you can watch it happen.
